Organisation
The
General Secretary is the secondary head of the Royal Household, responsible for coordinating all its services and standing in for the Head of the Royal Household in the event of absence or illness.
The
Head of the Military Chamber directs the department of the Royal Household which represents the military institution serving the person of the King.
These three officials make up the
organisation’s senior management team.
1. Office of the Head of the Royal Household
The main responsibility of the Office of the Head of the Royal Household is to ensure the smooth running of its services and the fulfilment of the tasks assigned to it.
In the field of international relations, the Royal Household will be assisted by a
Diplomatic Adviser , member of the Diplomatic Service who will report directly to the Head of the Royal Household.
The Diplomatic Adviser and the Comptroller are regarded as senior management.
2. The General Secretariat
The
General Secretariat The General Secretariat is staffed by 156 officials, excluding those assigned to the Security Service by the Ministry of the Interior, and is currently organised into the following
units:
s an auxiliary body to the Head of the Royal Household and the Secretary General, the office provides immediate support and assistance in the execution of their tasks..
Working alongside the other departments of the Royal Household, the Queen’s Secretariat studies, prepares and implements matters relating to the activities of Her Majesty the Queen.
Permanently responsible for the immediate security of the Royal Family. It comprises a Headquarters and State Security Forces assigned by the Ministry of the Interior.
Maintains contact with the media, keeping them informed of the Royal Family’s schedule of official engagements, as well as the content and details of these events.
Prepares and oversees protocol for the Royal Family’s official engagements, both at home and abroad.
esponsible for the economic, financial, budgetary and personnel management of the Household. Manages and coordinates telecommunications services and IT systems. Coordinates general maintenance services for the facilities at La Zarzuela Palace.
The heads of the above units are regarded as
management staff.
3. The Military Chamber
Responsible for organising the military activities of members of the Royal Family and maintaining military relations with the authorities at the Ministry of Defence. The Military Chamber comprises:
A General Officer on active service as an administrator.
He is the Head of the Military Chamber, and the
Royal Guard, reports to him in all respects, by delegation from the Head of the Royal Household.
A
Cabinet,, a
military legal adviser and a
military auditor provide support and assistance to the Head of the Military Chamber.
The
Cabinet comprises four sections, which deal respectively with personnel, protocol, operations, and logistics.
Aides-de-Champ of His Majesty the King.
The Aides assist His Majesty on a permanent basis, and assist Her Majesty the Queen for official engagements.
They also form part of the honour guard for foreign Heads of State on official visits to Spain. Four are from the Army, two from the Navy, two from the Air Force and one from the Civil Guard, performing these duties on a rota basis.
Royal Guard.
A joint-service military unit under the command of a colonel, comprising officers and enlisted personnel from the Army, the Navy and the Joint Services of the Armed Forces.
Its main duties are to provide a military guard, to pay honours and to provide ceremonial escorts for His Majesty the King and designated members of the Royal Family, as well as for foreign Heads of State on official visits to Spain, when ordered to do so.
As a military unit, it takes part in exercises and manoeuvres with other forces and collaborates in all kinds of activities organised by the Ministry of Defence or by the Army and Navy Headquarters, as well as in peacekeeping operations.
