Muchas gracias por vuestra bienvenida y por esta gran oportunidad de estar hoy, durante nuestra visita de Estado, en este acto centrado en la cooperación económica y comercial entre el Reino Unido y el Reino de España.
Permítanme que comience expresando la satisfacción que me produce ser testigo directo de la fuerte presencia de empresas españolas en el Reino Unido, que además se ha incrementado de forma significativa en los últimos años. Quisiera igualmente agradecer al empresariado británico la confianza depositada en España y en nuestra economía. Estoy convencido de que esta confianza mutua se mantendrá también en este momento en el que tenemos que afrontar importantes desafíos.
Para España, el Reino Unido ocupa un lugar muy destacado, ya que hemos logrado una profunda integración económica y comercial. Podría mencionar algunos de los datos que muestran la importancia excepcional de las relaciones económicas entre nuestros países.
En los últimos años, muchas empresas españolas han invertido de manera destacada en el Reino Unido, en diferentes sectores, intensificando de esta manera las estrechas relaciones económicas existentes entre ambos países.
El volumen anual de nuestros intercambios comerciales supera actualmente los 30.000 millones de euros, lo que hace que el Reino Unido constituya ya nuestro tercer mayor mercado de exportación de bienes y servicios. En 2016, continuó la expansión de las exportaciones españolas al Reino Unido, mientras que, por el contrario, se han reducido las importaciones españolas de origen británico. Hoy, España es el décimo mayor cliente en el mundo para el mercado británico.
En cuanto a las inversiones del Reino Unido en España, con los últimos datos disponibles, de 2015, el Reino Unido fue el segundo país inversor en España y representa el 12% del total de inversiones extranjeras recibidas en nuestro país. Esas inversiones generaron unos 110.000 empleos directos en España, donde están establecidas cerca de 1.000 empresas británicas.
Estas cifras muestran que el mercado español representa un entorno propicio y adecuado para que las empresas británicas puedan hacer negocios. Me gustaría destacar algunas de nuestras principales fortalezas: las infraestructuras españolas, como puertos, aeropuertos, ferrocarriles y carreteras, destacan por ser unas de las mejores del mundo. El capital humano es de alta calidad. También se han realizado importantes inversiones en innovación en sectores tradicionales y en sectores intensivos en tecnología puntera como energías renovables, biotecnología, salud y ciudades inteligentes (smart-cities), llegando a ser algunas de nuestras empresas líderes mundiales en todas estas industrias.

También el Reino Unido ha atraído el interés de las empresas españolas, que lo han situado en lugar preferente en sus procesos de internacionalización gracias a la facilidad para la implantación en vuestro país de las empresas extranjeras, la seguridad jurídica que ofrece al inversor y el alto grado de liberalización de vuestra economía.
This is why no wonder the United Kingdom is the top nation for foreign investment by Spanish companies. Spanish investment in Britain surpassed 82 billion euros in 2015 (according to the latest available data). It has been mostly in recent years that Spanish companies have invested heavily in the United Kingdom. Figures for investment flows show that in 2016 Spain was the country that made the largest investments in the United Kingdom. These investments were in a wide range of sectors, and in many cases by leading Spanish companies, which now hold interests in major present and future infrastructure projects in Britain.
Good proof of this is the imminent inauguration by Her Majesty the Queen of the Queens Ferry Crossing in the river Forth estuary, the longest three-tower suspension bridge in the world. In addition, we should mention Aberdeen’s external harbour in the Nigg bay, the design and building of modern recycling plants, the involvement of Spanish industry in the Crossrail construction or the future High Speed Two railway network, which is actually today the most ambitious transport infrastructure project in Europe.
These figures are clear evidence of the intense and dynamic reality that defines of our bilateral relations and there is still much potential and mutual benefit to be fulfilled.
However, we cannot deny that the scenario originated by the UK’s decision to leave the EU has created uncertainty and doubts for our companies, business, and specially small and medium-size enterprises. We must make sure that the current negotiations reduce this uncertainty to a minimum. It is extremely important that the future framework of our relations establishes the conditions for a close economic relationship trying to minimize future obstacles and barriers.
The vitality of our trade and investment clearly shows that both nations have made the right choice by decisively committing to opening up our economies. The United Kingdom has always been an earnest champion of the openness of its economy and has also been a pioneer in the introduction of a wide-ranging programme of economic liberalization; a model that has been greatly followed by other nations. Over the past decades, Spain has followed the same course. This common commitment to open trade and investment must continue.
Both Spain and the UK have implemented reforms to address the crisis that has affected our two nations. We have overcome many of the difficulties caused by the severest crisis in recent history, and we can proudly affirm that Spain, today, is the fastest-growing major EU economy. In 2016, Spain’s GDP grew by 3.2%, for the second consecutive year, and growth in the first half of 2017 has continued at a vigorous rate.
Similarly, the UK is an example of the advantages of a competitive economy that is open to foreign trade. The dynamism of the British economy’s productive fabric has allowed the nation to prosper in its recovery.
It is you, businessmen and women, who lead the way by generating wealth and jobs; you are the most keenly aware of the benefits of entrepreneurship, of cooperation and of open markets when doing business. This is why I wish to take this opportunity to urge you to forge ahead.
Once again, I would like to thank you all for deepening and strengthening the longstanding close economic and trade relations between the Kingdom of Spain and the United Kingdom, and for furthering our shared and common goal of defending our principles and values of democracy and freedom.
