"...Without any doubt, the building in which we stand is a symbol of your nation’s institutional genius, renowned worldwide, and of your open and welcoming spirit, which has always been a hallmark of your society. The foundations of this distinguished institution were laid upon the ancient amphitheatre of Roman Londinium. This reminds us of the ancient and deep roots of the European space that we share, and reaffirms our conviction that this City and the United Kingdom have been, and will continue to be, an essential part of Europe..."

Specifically, the City of London —this great financial city— has been key to the modern-day expansion of the enlightened ideals that drove the world’s progress through freedom of the press and free trade. This has been one of the City’s major contributions to the world, and that is why its name is recognized the world over.

The City itself has witnessed the strong ties that, as I mentioned, bind the people of Spain and the United Kingdom. In the Middle Ages, trade between London and Spanish cities and ports such as Seville, Corunna and Santander was crucial to the economies of both our nations. The Monarchs of England and of Castile, aware of the importance of those commercial flows, exchanged a great many letters of safe-conduct to protect their merchants. In those days, Castilian wool and Andalusian wine were two of the most sought-after Spanish products in the British Isles, and since then, Spain has always been present in the City of London.

I cannot but welcome the fact that in recent years this presence has increased considerably, covering practically all the sectors moving and working in this economic and financial hub of the globalized world.

It so happens, by one of those coincidences resulting from our rich shared history, that a little more than 112 years ago —on 7 June 1905— my great-grandfather, King Alfonso XIII, was welcomed in this very building, on a State Visit to the United Kingdom at the invitation of King Edward VII. A very important visit in many senses…, as very soon after he would marry a British Princess, my great-grandmother, Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg, known as Princess Ena.

My parents, King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofía, also visited this Corporation in 1986, during a State Visit at the invitation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The visit took place the same year that Spain joined what was then the EEC, the European Economic Community. This had long been an aspiration of the Spanish people, as we sought to ground our fledgling democracy in the heart of the European project, based on the values of freedom and democracy, of a social State under the rule of law, and the free market.

More than three decades later, the country that Queen Letizia and I proudly represent is, thanks to the efforts of several generations of Spaniards, a modern and inclusive Spain, a country that is open and fully democratic, proud of its plurality and of its diversity; A thriving and vibrant Spain, which continues to further the European project in order to address the challenges of the 21st century.

I feel it important to reiterate that all of this has been thanks to the efforts of my fellow countrymen and women, many of whom are today established in this financial city and throughout the United Kingdom, working for Spanish or British companies, in your nation’s National Health Service, or at one of its many prestigious educational, cultural, scientific and sporting institutions. And here, I would like to remember Ignacio Echeverría, who heroically gave his life during the recent terrorist attack in London.

Likewise, hundreds of thousands of Britons live in Spain, thus enriching the relationship between our citizens, the ties between our societies, with a human bedrock that underpins the entirety of our bilateral relations. Therefore, I urge the British and Spanish governments to continue working tirelessly so that the agreement between the European Union and the United Kingdom on the United Kingdom’s withdrawal may give our citizens the necessary assurances and certainty.

Without any doubt, the building in which we stand is a symbol of your nation’s institutional genius, renowned worldwide, and of your open and welcoming spirit, which has always been a hallmark of your society. The foundations of this distinguished institution were laid upon the ancient amphitheatre of Roman Londinium. This reminds us of the ancient and deep roots of the European space that we share, and reaffirms our conviction that this City and the United Kingdom have been, and will continue to be, an essential part of Europe.

I shall conclude by raising my glass to the Lord Mayor and the City of London Corporation, with my best wishes and our most heartfelt congratulations and gratitude for this wonderful evening.
