am very happy to take part, once again, in the Gold Medal Ceremony held annually by the Queen Sofia Spanish Institute, whose aim is to strengthen the cultural ties between the United States, Spain and Latin America, as well as to broaden the knowledge of Spanish-speaking cultures.
Today we acknowledge the value of two remarkable people, who stand out by their excellence in their own fields.
President William J. Clinton played a significant role as a world leader during his presidential mandate, as well as devoting a great deal of effort to enhance political, economic and cultural ties between the United States and Spain.
Nowadays he still works at this task, through several international initiatives he is undertaking to help solve some of the pressing global problems confronting us.
The other person we reward today is the great Spanish actress Penélope Cruz, whose wonderful and versatile film career has brought to many international audiences the most profound and authentic sense of Spanish popular culture.
Both of them, so different from one another personally and professionally, have succeeded in directing their intelligence and energy towards a common goal: to spread a message of peace, harmony and well-being amongst so many cultures and societies from all over the world.
My heartfelt thanks, once more, to Oscar de la Renta and to the Queen Sofia Spanish Institute for doing a splendid job; and to you all my warmest good wishes for the coming Christmas Holidays.

Es para mí una gran satisfacción participar, un año más, en esta entrañable ceremonia de entrega de las Medallas de Oro que otorga anualmente el Queen Sofia Spanish Institute, y con la que se pretende reforzar los lazos culturales entre Estados Unidos, España y Latinoamérica, así como ampliar y difundir el conocimiento de la cultura de habla hispana.
En esta ocasión reconocemos a dos destacadas personalidades que, por motivos de su buen hacer, han sobresalido de forma notable en sus respectivas actividades.
Una, el presidente William J. Clinton, quien en su mandato presidencial jugó un muy significado papel como líder mundial, además de dedicar importantes esfuerzos a estrechar las relaciones políticas y económicas entre Estados Unidos y España.
Hoy día continúa esta labor a través de distintas iniciativas internacionales con las que intenta resolver algunos de los problemas globales más acuciantes a los que nos enfrentamos.
La otra persona a la que hoy reconocemos es la gran actriz española Penélope Cruz, quien a través de una magnífica y versátil cinematografía ha sabido llevar al gran público internacional, el más profundo y auténtico sentido de la cultura popular española.
Ambos, tan distintos y tan contrapuestos en sus actividades profesionales, han sabido catalizar su inteligencia y energías en beneficio de un objetivo común: la difusión de un mensaje de paz, armonía y bienestar entre las diferentes culturas y sociedades del mundo.
Muchas gracias, un año más, a Oscar de la Renta y al Queen Sofía Spanish Institute por la encomiable tarea que llevan a cabo; y para todos ustedes mi más cordial y afectuosa felicitación con motivo de las ya muy próximas Fiestas Navideñas.
