S
From the bottom of our hearts we would like to extend our thanks to all United States administrations, the Florida authorities and the citizens of San Agustín de la Florida (allow me to keep using the original Spanish name) for continously and generously giving their support to the preservation of this common legacy.
I think we have here the perfect formula for successful historical preservation. First there is the prevalence of the original Spanish element, well founded by the tenacity of the original settlers and their descendants. Then the professionalism of the U.S. Administration comes into the picture, introducing tax incentives and proper legislation. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, nothing would be possible without the innate philanthropic spirit of the U.S. citizens. The Spanish Government, which has been supporting the restoration of San Agustín for decades, appreciates this cooperative approach.
Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, Ponce de León ad many of the Spanish explorers will be watching our efforts. Some credit should be given to those less fortunate who went through the peninsula in search of other lands: Pánfilo de Narváez, Alvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, Hernando de Soto and Tristán de Luna. Some recognition should also be given to the Spanish governors who, as far as California, opened the first modest expressway linking both coasts.
We know that the founding fathers of the United States would surely appreciate our endeavours. And we owe it, not only to history and to our common heritage, but to our children and future generations as well.
We all should be called "adelantados", like Pedro Menéndez.
In a way this is what Pedro Menéndez did when he first landed at Cabo Cañaveral on his way to the bay of San Agustín. He probably had a premonition, that from there and centuries later, the United States would be sending manned spaceships to the Moon.
We must remember and preserve the past.
We also need to be aware of the future.
Gracias.
Thank you.
God bless America.
Viva España.
