r. President
We are extremely happy to share in Your Excellency´s pleasant company this moving ceremony with so many shoolchildren from Trinidad and Tobago.
I cannot think of a better way to end our first State Visit to this young and vibrant nation, with which we have so many historical and cultural ties.
I am sure that this Visit, which we shall carry in our hearts back to Spain, will promote a true reencounter between the Trinidadian and Spanish peoples.
Your nation has been built upon a rich variety of peoples and cultures, and we have enjoyed its many different musical and artistic expressions.
Therefore, we attach a special importance to this event today, where the stars are young people, who represent the future of every country.
One of the components of your cultural and historical heritage is the Spanish language, now spoken by more than four hundred million people around the world, which has become the second most important international communication language, and in which many of the masterpieces of world literature have been written.
From Cervantes to Carpentier, García Márquez, Neruda and Borges, countless authors have revealed the extraordinary richness and beauty of our language, whose importance in research, science and technology is also growing steadily.
I am delighted to see how devoted you are to learning a language that not only brings our two nations closer together, but which also opens up new economic and cultural horizons with your Latin American neighbours, and expands your own professional and employment prospects.
Before ending, allow me to stress that Spain will give every possible support to the efforts that Trinidad and Tobago is making to promote the teaching of Spanish.
Mr. President,
The Queen joins me in expressing our heartfelt gratitude for your Excellency´s kindness, and that of the First Lady, during our stay in this beloved country.
We also thank all those who have taken part in this cultural event, and especially young people here with us today, to whom we send our warmest wishes.
Thank you very much.
Muchas gracias.
