Palabras de Su Alteza Real el Príncipe de Asturias durante el almuerzo ofrecido por el Sr. Shultz, Secretario De Estado, con ocasión de la visita como Guardiamarina De Elcano

Estados Unidos de América, 26.05.1987

T

hank you very much for giving me this opportunity to enjoy your kind hospitality in the splendid redecorated Department of State.

As you know, Mr. Secretary, the sea has represented, and continues to represent, an invaluable vehicle for the bringing together of people and nations.

On this voyage aboard the Juan Sebastián de Elcano I have had the opportunity to experience everything my family, with its close ties to the Armada, has told me about the sea as a place in which the proverbial virtues of solidarity and gallantry are shaped.

I would like on this occasion, on my visit to the United States, as a midshipman of this prestigious vessel of the Spanish Navy, to emphasize the importance all Spaniards give to our relationship with the peoples of this side of the Atlantic, especially with the United States.

We are hopeful that the celebration of the 500th Anniversary of the Discovery of America will offer a unique opportunity to renew and reinforce our friendship and mutual respect Bearing in mind our common past, we will think about our future as protectors of freedom and democracy, the fundamentals of the Alliance to which both countries belong.

Allow me, Mr. Secretary, to toast the future of our two countries, to our friendship, to your well-being and that of President Reagan.
