Speech by H.R.H. the Prince of Asturias National at Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque

EE.UU.(Albuquerque. Nuevo Mexico), 05.10.2004

T

his is our first visit to the United States since My wife an I got married and we are glad it brought us to New Mexico. So allow me to emphasize how pleased the Princess and I are to be at this National Hispanic Cultural Center, to which I feel particularly close ever since my first visit in the year 2000 on the occasion of its foundation. In this period of time the last 4 years, I am aware that the Cultural Center has successfully implemented an important program of scenic arts and exhibits, the ecological recovery of the adjacent forest of the Rio Grande, and the execution of several educational projects with the active cooperation of the Instituto Cervantes. So let me tell you how extremely honored and thankful I feel for the decision of naming this future Center as "Principe de Asturias building". My official title as heir to the Spanish Crown. Most surely, the new building will serve to the goal of promoting language and culture, objectives shared by the National Hispanic Cultural Center and the Spanish institutions that it so generously hosts. That is the reason why I am so pleased that this building will bear my name, as a symbol of the close connection that brings us together for the promotion of our common culture.I would like to acknowledge the support and generosity of the Cultural Center in hosting the Instituto Cervantes and the Spanish Resource Center for our Ministry of Education and the University of New Mexico. I would also like to thank the Government and the legislature of New Mexico for their crucial contribution to this Resource Center. Finally, I would like to voice again my confidence in the future of the Foundation and the Center. The new international building, will allow the people of this city and State to have the opportunity of learning and improving their knowledge of the Spanish language,However, their work does not end here. Remember the Center and the Instituto Cervantes are an open window to all the Latin American countries to promote their culture, art and creativity. We must not forget that the Spanish language belongs to almost four hundred million people in more than twenty countries, and among them are the Spanish speaking New Mexicans. My sincere recognition to the Foundation of the National Hispanic Cultural Center and to the State of New Mexico for their interest in accomplishing this work. Thank you very much.
