Palabras de Su Alteza Real el Príncipe de Asturias en la Universidad De Aukland

Aukland, 03.07.1990

Q

ueridos estudiantes de Español:

I want to thank you, first of all, for your warm welcome to this Faculty of Arts.

It seems appropriate for an undergraduate like myself, to start a visit to New Zealand by going to the University. It gives me the funny feeling of being, somehow, at home, when in fact I could not be farther away.

The Spanish and New Zealander academic communities have not been up to now too close together. Distance is no excuse for that in our days. And I feel that something has to be done to put a remedy to it.

Too often Princes manifest their sorrow and denounce situations with which they do not agree, without being able to add anything constructive.

That is why I am very pleased to announce here today that an overseas study programme has been approved by the University of Auckland and the Spanish Ministry of Education, by which accomplished students of Spanish of this Faculty will be able to come to my country to further their studies.

The choice of this University to benefit from the programme, which, I am pleased to say; will bear my name, is rather obvious. The University of Auckland is the biggest University in New Zealand and, geographically, Auckland is the frontier between your country and the Spanish-speaking peoples of South America. It is my belief that the sea joins rather than separates humans, which is particularly true of seafaring nations such as yours and mine.

I want to thank you again for your welcome, and I sincerely hope that on my next visit I shall be able to address you in my language.
